SMR owns coconut estates in the ‘Coconut Triangle’ of Sri Lanka - the area covered by Colombo, Kurunegala and Puttalam districts. The estates shelter thousands of coconut trees. Fresh coconuts grown in these trees are used for our products. Farmers employed from the vicinity engage in maintaining crops, plucking coconuts, observing maturation periods, de-husking coconuts and other activities in the estates. The plucked coconuts are then sent to oil mills owned by the company to obtain oil.
Our oil mill manufactures premium quality crude coconut oil. Crude coconut oil is used directly as unrefined coconut oil. The larger portion of it is sent to the refinery to refine, bleach and deodorise in order to obtain RBD coconut oil.
SMR’s margarine plant produces margarines and shortening to be used as ingredients for breads, cakes, biscuits, other bakery products and confectionery. This plant is capable of producing many forms of fat blends to match the required specification of customers.
Our refinery is the first continuous physical edible oil refinery in Sri Lanka. It is also the first refinery to be organic certified in the country. The plant is operated by employees who have decades of expertise working at refineries around the world.
The filling and packing of all our products are conducted in this section by a highly skilled and efficient team. Activities such as filling of oil, labelling and packaging are carried out here in varying scales, from 1-ton bulk packaging to small retail packaging. A team of professionals enact quality assurance procedures and maintain standards of packed goods.
We take pride in our virgin coconut oil plant and coconut flour mill. Employing a range of skilled personnel, this plant contains designated spaces and machinery for coconut de-shelling, grating, drying under controlled temperature, expelling, filtration, sedimentation and de-moisturisation. Coconut oil cake that is obtained as a by-product is then ground down to fine coconut flour in the coconut flour mill.
